BEYOND THE DEPARTURE: When Staying Is No Longer Possible

Inside the European Parliament — A Story of Displacement, Identity, and Rebirth

Art at the Parliament

On February 3, 2026, Lebanese artist Ghanem Hassan unveiled his 9th solo exhibition, Beyond the Departure, inside the European Parliament in Brussels.
The moment was historic: the Lebanese flag stood in a place of honor beside the Italian and European Union flags, a symbolic recognition of Lebanese contemporary art at the heart of European governance.

This exhibition is not simply a collection of paintings.
It is a testimony of survival, a visual diary of leaving home, rebuilding identity, and carrying dreams that refuse to die.

A Journey That Begins With Loss And Moves Toward Hope

In 2022, Hassan left Lebanon for Italy, because staying was no longer possible.

The rupture of that departure, the loneliness, the uncertainty, the weight of everything left behind, became the emotional foundation of this exhibition. Through layered textures, gold leaf, and abstract forms, Hassan transforms personal displacement into a universal narrative of resilience.

The exhibition explores:

  • the emotional cost of leaving home

  • the silence and isolation of starting over

  • the fragility of interrupted dreams

  • the dignity of rebuilding identity from zero

  • the human right to hope

Presented in the European Parliament, the works resonate with themes of freedom, rights, and belonging, bridging personal experience with global discourse.
